Summer Family & Friends Gathering Summer 2024
Academic
- College Core Courses?
- If you are a Junior Transfer student and want to meet with an Advisor?
- stevensonadvising@ucsc.edu
- cowell@ucsc.edu
- Requirements to be a Full time student?
- To be a full time student, a student has to be enrolled in at least 12 units (a standard class is 5 units, so that would be two 5 unit classes and one 2 unit). The norm is to take three 5 unit classes each quarter. That is a university-wide requirement. Each department has requirements for how many classes a student will have to take over their career (and in which order) in order to complete the major. Some majors have fewer required classes than others. Some have many, many more.
Advising
- How do students connect with an academic advisor?
- Students can email their respective college advising with general questions.
- For specific questions should be directed to appropriate units, such as department financial aid, ….
- Students can schedule appointments via Slug Success for college and department advising. However, unless critical or urgent, we ask new students to wait until the fall quarter begins to schedule appointments.
- Is there an advisor for student athletes?
- UCSC does not have academic advisors at the colleges, especially for student athletes.
- With class scheduling online (and finished), how can our students talk to a live person to resolve scheduling conflicts and full lab sections?
- If a course, lab, or section is full, students can not enroll. However, they can waitlist for the appropriate course.
- Are there academic counselors who can help plan courses?
- College advising works with students on general planning, whereas their major advising works on specific major planning.
- Could parents meet with our son's counselor to better understand what is expected from our son to reach his goal? How do we make this happen?
Activities
- Is the 'Welcome Week Rave' a University sanctioned event?
- We do not have a Welcome Week Rave Scheduled, but an event that we have is called Rising Up Rave, which is a university event. This is an open event that is all about health, safety, and awareness ....and dancing too.
- How can we keep up to date with what is happening at the colleges?

- Early Move-In Questions?
- Sign up to be a Volunteer for Move-In.
- When will we find out what kind of room my daughter has been assigned to?
- 8/20 is the big release day for housing assignments! So your students should be able to check their e-mail and on their portal and see.
- Move in date: is there an appointment schedule the day of move in. Payment of housing, when is due.
- Payment is done through Student Business Services and you should be able to follow the steps there to get to MyUCSC -
- Please tell us more about the dorms.
- We are the first colleges of UCSC, and these buildings were some of the first ones to be built. We have residence halls, which are spaces with a shared bathroom and central hallways, and we have apartment spaces as well, with a smaller cohort of students living together.
- What to bring/not bring?
- How do you match students with roommates?
- We have some initial surveying that students participate in, and we try our best to match roommates to fit that. However, a large bulk of our students have connected either during the Summer Slug Send-offs or other ways in which the latest class finds ways to connect, and any roommate requests that were sent our way weigh heavily as we try and fill our spaces and the students’ requests for roommates simultaneously. But we also have Community Living Agreements for all roommates to do together in order to jump start some of those difficult conversations that come about when we engage in shared living to make this adjustment as seamless and fun as possible.
- AC/Heater in the Dorm Rooms?
- No AC. Heaters yes
- Housing Assignments, Move-In Time, Roommate information?
- Visit Housing Portal: https://ucsc.starrezhousing.com/StarRezPortal
- What can we use to put things on the wall?
- The good old blue tack is what I like best, but if they do use command hooks, they should be mindful not to peel paint from the walls. https://www.amazon.com/Blu-Tack-S050Q-Reusable-Adhesive-75g/dp/B001FGLX72
ResLife
- Are there water filling stations near the dorms or do students buy water?
-
- Yes
- Could you tell us more about the student resident life?
- When will we find out my son’s dormitory address for shipping his belongings?
- Can students carry pepper spray?
- What is security like at night, can anyone drive in, or is there some kind of checkpoint?
- It is an open Campus
- What are the school library hours, and where can he go if he wants to study after it closes?
- Are bikes a good idea?
- If you are not a biker, this might not be the best time to learn. We have some really wicked hills around here, so biking can be a lot. We have an e-bike program (https://taps.ucsc.edu/bike-programs/bike-share.html) on campus that the students enjoy. But if you bring a bike, please ensure you bring a quality lock and looping material. Bikes are not allowed in their rooms, but there are both covered and uncovered bike parking near all of our buildings. We recommend a good heavy duty lock (U locks are best).
- How do you handle natural disasters?
- We have emergency response guidelines and protocols. Recently, there was a fire, and we worked with our colleagues at San Jose State to safely relocate our students.
- How busy if Move-In?
- Move-in day is like a holiday weekend at a popular amusement park — BUSY and buzzing with positive and exciting energy. From start to finish (getting onto campus to completely unpack) can take anywhere from 2 hours to 3 days, depending on how fast you want to move and how much you choose to bring along. On average, a move-in experience can be done in about 2 hours total.
- Where will be check in for Move-In?
- Dining options/Flexi/Meal plans?
- Mailroom Information
General
- Where can we find the bus schedule that goes back and forth from UCSC to Silicon Valley/SJC?
- We have no information on how much we need to pay our son's tuition, when will we find out? We need to get organized financially.
