Emerging Visions: Creative Practice at the Nexus of Freedom and Justice
Opening Reception: April 19, 2018, 5:00 pm-8:00 pm
The Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery at the University of California Santa Cruz is proud to present “Emerging Visions: Creative Practice at the Nexus of Freedom and Justice.” The exhibition features works by twelve artists and independent presses that span the genres of photography, performance, multimedia installation, printmaking, zines, and artists’ books. Taking the writings of thinkers such as speculative fiction author Octavia Butler and and social justice facilitator adrienne maree brown as inspiration, “Emerging Visions” features artists who expand how freedom can be enacted by embedding that which is spectacular and radical into everyday life.
The artists featured in the show include Santa Cruz-based artists Felicia Rice/Moving Parts Press, Janina Larenas, Alma Esperanza Villa Loma, and Zoe Sandoval as well as artists working in Oakland: Leila Weefur Floss Editions, Tiny Splendor Press, and Unity Press. Beyond the Bay Area, “Emerging Visions” also includes work by Jennif(f)er Tamayo, a poet and performance artist in Sacramento, Self Help Graphics and Art, a community-based art organization in East Los Angeles, Wura-Natasha Oguni, a multi-media artist who resides in Lagos, Nigeria and Austin, Texas, and Keris Salmon, a Brooklyn-based artist.
