Susana Ruiz

Susana Ruiz
Associate Provost, Managing Director of the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery

I’m an Associate Professor in the Film + Digital Media Department. I’m a media artist, game/experience designer, educator, and curator.

I explore the potential of art, play, and storytelling to intersect in ways that inspire humane and innovative approaches to social transformation, aesthetic expression, and public pedagogy. As a first-generation middle school, high school, and college graduate, I was fortunate to earn my BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, an institution with a progressive legacy founded on the principle that advanced education should be free to all. It was here that my interest in community-building and social practice merged with studio art practice, media-making, and humanities scholarship, thereby establishing an interdisciplinary foundation for my research into creative approaches to addressing societal challenges. I earned my MFA from the University of Southern California’s Interactive Media and Games Division in the School of Cinematic Arts (SCA), and my Ph.D. from SCA’s Media Arts + Practice Program. I stepped into my role as Associate Provost of Cowell College in Fall 2024 and am committed to supporting the success and well-being of our remarkable community of students, staff, and faculty.
