Cowell College

Founded in 1965 as a bold experiment in reimagining higher education, Cowell College is the first residential college established at UC Santa Cruz. It is home to the historic Cowell Press, the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery, and a hands-on core course focused on justice and ethics. Guided by the motto “The pursuit of truth in the company of friends,” Cowell offers students a place to think deeply, act creatively, and build a supportive, engaged community.
