2017 Welcome Leaders

Welcome Week 2017

Welcome Leaders are a critical part of Fall Welcome Week at Cowell College!

Cowell Welcome Leaders (WLs) are a committed group of volunteer students, who assist new Cowell frosh and transfer students during Fall Move-In and Welcome Week. WLs work cooperatively with residential and college staff to help new students meet each other, learn about resources, and become a part of Cowell's vibrant community. WLs also help with college-wide programs throughout the year.

If you have a question, idea, or want to get involved, Welcome Leaders are here to help. Learn a bit about your 2017-18 WLs below. They share their interests, fun facts, and what they remember from when they were new to campus. We look forward to meeting you!

I am a 2nd year Environmental Studies major from the Central Valley. I used to live in a small mountainous town a few hours from the Oregon/California border. I’ve been surrounded by nature for the majority of my life, this is what brought me to UC Santa Cruz. The Environmental Studies program feels like home to me. I have special interest in the social and political implications of environmental change as well as the natural systems that keep humans alive: soil and atmosphere. The classes I've taken have supported my interests. I would love to talk with others who are interested in the department! My favorite part about Welcome Week was getting the chance to develop friendships before classetfs started. Sharing experiences and getting to know people in a relaxed environment is always fun. I’m enthusiastic about helping people make friends. I’m an extrovert, frisbee and ukulele playing dancer/barista, who loves getting to know just about anyone so don’t be shy.

Hi there beautiful beings! I am a 4th year Psychology major. In addition to being a Welcome Leader I, lead the meditation club on campus, volunteer at the animal shelter, and love to make music and visual art. My favorite classes are astronomy classes. Whhfile I can’t recall every detail taught in the class, I think it’s awesome to learn about things that are outside the bounds of your general interests. This will be my 3rd year as a Welcome Leader. I love Welcome Week because I get to work with an amazing team of volunteers. I love helping people discover what a wonderful place Cowell College is.

I’ve enjoyed the Physics 5 series and I am looking forward to upper division Physics courses. I like to share the things I know so, I am lookingaf forward to meeting new people. When I am not in class, I am doing one of the following: studying at the library, playing guitar, playing video games or, playing sports at OPERS. I played intramural sports with a group of friends and we won an intramural volleyball championship title. Don’t’ be afraid to say hello and ask me questions, especially about the hidden trails on campus.

    Ava Mills

I am from Montana, “Big Sky Country”. I moved to Davis in high school. After high school, I wanted to study Circus Arts in London but after a tour of UCSC, I fell in love with the campus. Moving here wasn’t an easy decision. Snowboarding has always been my life but in Santa Cruz, there is no snow for miles. After moving here, I realized backpacking is a good substitute for snowboarding. I am a second year experimenting with different majors. Before coming here, I wished I had known to choose a major that complements my passions. What you study in college doesn’t necessarily dictate your career path. Choose a major that you’re passionate about rather than choosing one because you think it will grant access to your idafeal career. I’m a member of Cowell Senate; I oversee the Entertainment Co-op. My hobbies include: traveling, reading, the beach, and Instagram. I try to make sure my Instagram aesthetic is on point. Some super duper fun facts about me are, I can hula-hoop on my nose, for 3 years in a row I went to the Snowboard State Championships for racing, I can drive manual stick shift, and I got a 100% in the smartphone game,“Paper io”. I am looking forward to meeting all new Cowell students during Welcome Week. I will help you get acclimated to your new home. Come talk to me about anything!

During Welcome Week I am excited to go on the hike because I missed it last year. Also, I really love chatting about the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, conspiracy theories, Steven Universe, and make-up. I’m interested in a lot of things and I love learning about new things. I am really friendly so don’t be afraid to say, “hi”!

Hi. I’m a San Francisco native. I’m excited to start my second year living at Cowell. I may change my mind later but, right now I plan to double major in Environmental Studies and Legal Studies. You’ll have plenty of time to decide your major. You’ll take classes that will help you figure out what you want to major in. So far, my favorite memories of college happened during Welcome Week. I bonded with my roommates during Boardwalk Frolic and met friends at the block party. One of my favorite things about being a student at UCSC are the opportunities to earn hands-on experience in the field lfyou are passionate about. In addition to being a Welcome Leader, I am the Program Director at the Student Volunteer Center, I’ve performed with the Chautauqua Theater Festival, and I am a member of Cowell Senate. Something that I wished I had known sooner, is how fun the PE classes are at OPERS. Spring quarter freshman year, I took a ballet class and loved it. When I am not working or studying, you can find me reading Jane Austen, exploring trials on campus, window shopping downtown, or getting boba at Café Iveta on campus.
