Morley Baer Centennial Celebration
Conversation and Photograph Installation with Joshua Baer
April 5, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of renowned photographer, Morley Baer’s birth. Cowell College and the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery will observe the occasion with a celebratory dinner and a presentation by Morely’s son, Joshua Baer on March 31, 2016. Staff from the UCSC Special Collections, which is the caretaker for all of Morley’s photographic negatives, will be on hand to add to the discussion.
Morley Baer was one of the foremost architectural photographers in the world. He received many important commissions from leading architects, such as, Craig Edwards, Charles Moore, and William Turnbull, Jr. Baer’s photographs of Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Julia Morgan buildings are considered important resources for understanding American architecture and design in the 20th century. Many of his photographs are encapsulated in three books; Light Years, The Wilder Shore, and California Plain. His body of work is now recognized as one of the foundations of architectural photography.
Morley Baer’s friendship with Bay Area Modernist architect, William Wurster led to the construction of Mr. Baer’s iconic, personal residence, the Garrapata Stonehouse on the Big Sur Coast. Wurster orchestrated the creation of the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design, which brought the three schools of architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning into one organization. The Baer two-story house which Wurster designed, used river-stone, creating an organic building that looked as though it grew out of the rock that the house sits upon. The house commands a striking view of Garrapata Beach and Soberanes Point.
