2009 Cowell College Prizes

The John Dizikes Writing Prize For Cowell College Students

Call for Submissions

Submissions are being accepted for a prize of five hundred dollars for excellent non-fiction prose writing in any field. Entries must consist of a single essay in English written for a UCSC course, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 words in length. Please include a word-count notation on the final page.

Judgment criteria: essay form, prose style and lucidity, word choice, and technical perfection in the use of the English language. One submission per student.

Entries must be submitted under a pseudonym, in duplicate hardcopy, typed and double spaced with pages numbered. Please also submit an electronic copy to tsoottin[at]ucsc.edu. In the "Subject" field of your e-mail, type "Dizikes Prize Entry."

Careful proofreading is strongly advised. Essays not conforming to the length criteria will not be considered. Include a sealed envelope containing the author's name, e-mail address, student ID number, permanent address, telephone number, and name and instructor of course for which the essay was written.

2009 Cowell College Poetry Prize

Cowell College will be awarding the following prize in poetry to Cowell students:

Written Poetry:
Interested students may submit up to 3 poems, no longer than six pages total! Entries for the written poetry prize must be submitted with a pseudonym. Attach a sealed envelope providing student name, pseudonym, email address, and phone number. Student names should not appear on submitted poetry to assure anonymity in judging. Submissions must be turned in to the Cowell Provost Office (Room # 117) by 12 noon on May 6th, 2009.

2009 Cowell College Poetry Prize

The following prize is open to all UCSC undergraduate students::

UCSC Annual Dante Prize:
The UCSC Annual Dante Prize will be awarded to the best essay dealing with any aspect of Dante's Divine Comedy. Entries must not be more than 5000 words or less than 2000 words. Candidates must submit two clean, typewritten and double-spaced copies. (Award: $300.00)

Competition guidelines

All entries must be submitted under a pseudonym.

  • Label your entry with your pseudonym and the name of the prize.
  • Attach an envelope to each entry. On the outside of the envelope, write your pseudonym and the name of the prize for which you are competing.
  • Inside the envelope, put a sheet of paper on which you have written your pseudonym, your real name, the name of the prize, both your local and summer addresses, your telephone number, and your student identification number.
  • Please also indicate whether you wrote your essay for a course at UCSC and, if so, name the course and the instructor.

Entries must be submitted by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, to the Cowell Provost's Office, Room 117, Cowell College. Incomplete, late, or incorrectly packaged submissions will be disqualified.
