Groups & Clubs at Cowell
Cowell College offers a variety of clubs and interest groups, based on the interest of student planners each year. Below are some clubs you may see at Cowell this year, plus information on the campuswide student groups. Please check The Handout to learn specific dates, times, and locations for a particular quarter.
Cowell Student Senate
The Senate is the student governing board of Cowell; every Cowell student is eligible to become a full voting member of the Senate. Senate meets Thursdays at 7:30pm. There is much more to learn about the Senate and how to get involved.
Book Club
Love to read? Join the Cowell Book Club for reading adventures. The books are chosen by club members; some of the reading is done over winter or spring break, so make sure to inquire early so you can join the fun without needing to catch up. Book club meets Tuesdays at 8pm (fall quarter). For more info, contact Katie.
Classic Cinema Series
Like movies and feel like you've not seen enough of the classics (or just can't GET enough)? Films that are deeply ingrained into our culture due to their cinematic impact will be the focus of the winter film screenings. For more info on the winter quarter series, contact Chris.
Jog Club
Want to learn about the great trails that you can explore with friends? Outings with the Jog Club include visits to Pogonip, uppercampus, Wilder ranch, and Henry Cowell. All levels welcome. Got your jog on with the Jog Club! For more info, contact Michael.
Tea Time
A chance for students to relax while enjoying different types of tea! Bring your homework, conversation, and a mug. For more info, contact Elly.
Writer's Circle
This club gives Cowell students a space to creatively express their writing and ideas. Participants will be able to simply be heard and, if desired, receive constructive criticism to best improve their work. The club experiments from meeting to meeting with various writing techniques, topics, styles, and mediums. For more info, contact Jennafer.
Public Speaking Club
The Public Speaking Club is organized by a Cowell student but is open to any UCSC student who would like to learn to articulate publicly, or just practice. First time visitors welcome at every meeting. For more info, contact Sam.
Chess Club
Cowell's groundskeeper Gary Roe loves chess! He started the Cowell Chess Club (it's a labor of love after his work day ends). All levels and all of campus is invited to play a fun game of chess. Boards will be available, or bring your own. Contact Gary to learn more.
Warrior Yoga
For several years, Cowell has partnered with Warrior Yoga to offer free weekly yoga classes right here at Cowell, to encourage the health and well-being of our students. For more info, contact Karen.
Color Guard Club
In this club, students come together and learn how to spin, dance, toss, and much more. For more info, contact Priscilla or Yoandra.
Student Expression Committee
Interested in seeing more student art at Cowell College? Collaborate with other Cowell students to establish lasting statements towards a diverse community at Cowell. We encourage student expression through a creative voice! For more info, contact Elly.
UCSC Student Organizations and Government
Cowell students can also get involved with a large number of campuswide student-led clubs and organizations. The Student Organization Advising & Resources (SOAR) unit supports many of these groups as well as well as UCSC's Student Media and Student Union Assembly (SUA).
